How do you make a next step with a boy?

me and this boy walk pass each other in the hallways and smile. we both have the same friend, but he's not really helping us out. I'm too shy to just walk up to him and talk to him and plus im a little old fashion and rather be chased then being the chaser but i want to let him know that i like him s he can move to the next step. but i dont want to seem to easy to get lol :D
