Why are there so many army badge chasers?

It seems that many people in the army spend their entire careers chasing badges and ribbons, why is this the case? is there some sort of incentive to having a bunch of quals they may or may not use? for example i recently met an Army infantryman who is currently serving as a DI this soldier was an airborne ranger sniper air assault qualified GI JOE and was going to more schools after his stint as a DI. This doesnt seem like an isolated case as I have run into many soldiers always talking and talking about these schools and how they hope they can get them when the re-up.
