In the Old Testament God seems more concerned with punishment for disobedience, there are very few instances of forgiveness except for sins committed by His favorites. David was forgiven for causing the death of Bathsheba's husband. The Judeans were forgiven for centuries of idol worship. Jephthah was forgiven for butchering his daughter.
